Hotel Booking in Google AI Mode: What Independent Hotels Should Do

Short answer

Google began letting US travelers book hotels inside AI Mode on August 27, 2026, paying with Google Pay. The ten launch partners are five chains and five booking sites, and Google's post names no independent hotels. Google has a waitlist for its new booking standard, so first check your rates reach Google.

Google has started letting US travelers book a hotel without leaving AI Mode, its conversational search. This guide covers what launched, who can take those bookings today and what an independent hotel can do now. Everything about the launch comes from Google's own pages, read on October 13, 2026.

What did Google launch for hotel booking?

On August 27, 2026, Google announced hotel booking inside AI Mode in Search (Google's announcement). A traveler describes the trip and gets a visual list of hotels, with guest reviews and key factors to compare. To book, they choose "Continue on Google", which appears next to any integrated partner. From there Google says it takes a few taps to pick a room type, review details such as the cancellation policy and pay through Google Pay.

Google says the hotel or booking platform acts as merchant of record and handles any customer service. Booking has started rolling out in the US, in English, and will reach more people "over the coming weeks".

Which hotels can take bookings in AI Mode?

Google named ten partners: Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. That is five hotel chains and five booking sites. The announcement neither names nor rules out independent hotels.

Google's UCP for Lodging page describes the route for others. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard that is expanding into travel, so that Google surfaces such as AI Mode can turn AI conversations into instant room reservations. Google says a hotel can use its existing central reservation system or property feeds, stays merchant of record and keeps its guest data, loyalty rewards and post-booking relationship. It is not open yet: Google invites hotels to join a waitlist and says detailed onboarding and specifications are coming soon.

What are points prices in AI Mode?

The same announcement says AI Mode can now show the cost of hotels and flights in points or miles. Choice, Hilton and Wyndham are first for hotels, with Accor and Hyatt to follow. To redeem, the guest follows a link to the partner's site. A hotel with no points program has no points price to show, so a guest comparing rewards options may see a chain's room beside your cash rate.

What does it mean for a hotel's direct bookings?

Nothing we read changes your commission today. Our reading, not Google's statement: if your hotel is listed on Booking.com or Expedia, those are the partners AI Mode could book it through, so a guest who finds you there may still book through a booking site. Google's pages say nothing about what an AI Mode booking costs a hotel, so ask your booking sites and your booking engine rather than assume.

What can an independent hotel do now?

  1. Ask your booking engine, channel manager or property management system whether it plans to support UCP for Lodging and whether it has joined the waitlist. Google says the standard is built to work with a hotel's existing reservation system or property feeds, so your provider is the likely route.
  2. Check that your rates already reach Google. Google says a Business Profile alone shows no prices, and that direct integration is currently unavailable due to high demand, so most hotels send rates through a connectivity partner (Hotel Center Help: share your rates). See Google's free booking links.
  3. Keep your Business Profile accurate. Google Business Profile for hotels covers what to check each month.
  4. Read your cancellation policy as a guest would. Google says guests review it before they pay.
  5. Keep recording the source of every booking, so you can see if Google starts to matter. See tracking which ad brought a booking.
  6. Be careful with anyone selling an "AI Mode listing" now. Google has not opened onboarding.

What else changed on Google on September 30?

Google ended its third-party rates feature for hotel ads. Google's help page says Hotel Ads campaigns that relied on it stop serving after that date, and a hotel needs its own direct price feed to keep advertising there (Hotel Center Help). We have updated Google Hotel Ads for small hotels to match.

What is still unknown?

  • Whether, and when, independent hotels outside the ten partners can take bookings in AI Mode.
  • What an AI Mode booking costs the hotel.
  • How those bookings will show in your reports.

Google's pages do not answer these yet. We will update this guide when they do. To see what the booking sites cost you today, use our savings calculator. For the wider plan, read how independent hotels get more direct bookings.

MarginStay runs Google Hotel Ads and Google Search ads for independent hotels, so we have a stake in this topic. The launch details come from Google's announcement and its UCP for Lodging page, and the rate setup from Hotel Center Help, all read on October 13, 2026. These pages are changing quickly, so check them before you act. The route table is our reading.

Not directly yet, as far as Google's pages say. Its ten launch partners are five chains and five booking sites. Google says detailed onboarding and specifications are coming soon, so ask your booking engine provider about its plans.

Who is the merchant of record for a booking made in AI Mode?

Google says the hotel or booking platform acts as merchant of record and handles customer service. For a booking made through a booking site, that site is the booking platform.

Does Google AI Mode show hotel prices in points?

Yes. Google says AI Mode can show the cost of hotels and flights in points or miles, starting with Choice, Hilton and Wyndham, with Accor and Hyatt to follow. To redeem points, the guest follows a link to the partner's site. A hotel with no points program has no points price to show.

Do hotels pay to be booked through AI Mode?

The Google pages we read do not say. They describe the hotel or booking platform as merchant of record but give no fee. If a booking site takes the booking, start with the commission terms in your agreement, and ask your booking engine provider whether any fee applies to bookings from Google.
