Google Hotel Ads for Small Hotels: How They Work and What They Cost

Short answer

Google Hotel Ads show your hotel's own price and booking link in Google's hotel results on Search and Maps, next to the booking sites. You pay per click, with a fixed bid or a percentage of the nightly price. Google publishes no price list, so the number that matters is what each booking costs you.

This guide is for owners and managers of small independent US hotels who want to know how Google Hotel Ads work and what they cost. Everything about how the ads work comes from Google's own help pages. The cost example is ours and is labeled as illustrative.

What are Google Hotel Ads?

Google says hotel campaigns let you bid for hotel ads that appear when a traveler searches for a hotel on Search or Maps. The ads sit in Google's hotel booking module, which can show photos of the hotel, amenities, prices and a link to book (Hotel Center Help). In practice, your own price can appear in the same list as Expedia's and Booking.com's, with a link to your own booking page.

Google needs three things from you: a list of your hotels, current prices for different stays, and landing pages on your website. These are managed in a Hotel Center account, which links to a Google Ads account where budgets and bids are set.

How do you pay for Google Hotel Ads?

You pay when a traveler clicks. Google's bidding overview for hotel ads lists four bid strategies, and all of them charge per click:

  • Manual CPC. You bid a fixed amount for each click.
  • CPC%. You bid a percentage of the room price per night. Google says this is the total price per night, including taxes and fees (Google Ads Help).
  • Enhanced CPC. Used with CPC or CPC%, it adjusts your bids to try to bring in more booking value.
  • Target ROAS. Google sets each bid automatically, aiming for the return on ad spend you choose.

Google also had commission bidding, where a partner paid a percentage only when a booking was made or a stay happened. Its help pages now say those commission-based bid strategies are being sunset, so plan on paying per click.

What does a booking from Google Hotel Ads cost?

Google does not publish a price list. Hotel ads are sold at auction, so your cost depends on your bids, your competitors and how many clicks turn into bookings. The last part matters most. Take an illustrative CPC% bid of 4% on a room whose total nightly price is $220, and a 3-night stay worth $660.

Clicks per bookingCost per clickCost per bookingShare of a $660 stay
8$8.80$70.4010.7%
12$8.80$105.6016.0%
20$8.80$176.0026.7%

Illustrative. The nightly price includes taxes and fees, as Google's CPC% does. Your bids and booking rate will differ.

The same bid can cost far less than a booking site, or almost as much. The difference is how many visitors book once they reach your page, which is why linking each booking to its ad comes first. Then compare the result with what booking sites charge you, using how much Booking.com charges hotels and how much Expedia charges hotels.

How does a small hotel get started?

Google's guide for hotel owners gives two routes. If your rates are connected to Google directly, you can set up hotel campaigns yourself in Google Ads. If you are connected through a partner, Google says to contact that connectivity partner to get started. Most small hotels take the second route, because Google says direct integration is currently unavailable due to high demand. A connectivity partner can be your booking engine, channel manager, property management system or central reservation system (Hotel Center Help: share your rates).

  1. Get on Google for free first. Claim your Google Business Profile and get your rates into free booking links, which cost nothing per click (see Google's free booking links).
  2. Ask your booking engine or channel manager whether it can run Hotel Ads for you or connect you to Hotel Center.
  3. Set up conversion tracking, so every booking records its value and the ad that brought it.
  4. Start with a small budget, check your cost per booking after a few weeks, and adjust your bids.

What is Performance Max for travel goals?

It is a second way to advertise a hotel on Google. Google's developer guide says that, unlike Hotel Ads, you do not need a Hotel Center account to use it, and that its ads can serve across Google channels such as Search, Display, Video and Discover. It sets bids automatically to win as many conversions, or as much conversion value, as it can. Google reports that advertisers using Performance Max campaigns see an average of 18% more incremental conversions at a similar cost per action (Google Ads Help). That is Google's own average across advertisers, not a promise for your hotel.

Should a hotel use free booking links or paid Hotel Ads?

Start with free booking links, then add paid ads once you can measure cost per booking. Google says there is no cost for clicks on free booking links and that bids have no impact on their ranking (Google's free booking links page).

Are Google Hotel Ads worth it for a small hotel?

They can be, because they reach travelers at the moment they compare prices, and every booking lands on your own booking page. A booking site usually costs 20% to 30% of a booking once add-ons are counted (see the real cost of an OTA booking). If Hotel Ads bring bookings for less, they are worth running. If you cannot see what each booking cost, you cannot tell. MarginStay runs Google Hotel Ads alongside Google Search, Meta and Instagram ads and email, and links every booking to the ad that brought it. Through us, a direct booking usually costs 8% to 12%. MarginStay runs Google Hotel Ads for independent hotels, so we have a stake in this topic. How Hotel Ads and Performance Max work comes from Google's own help pages, read on October 1, 2026. They change often, so check them before you act. The cost example is illustrative.

Google Hotel Ads: quick answers

How much do Google Hotel Ads cost?

Google does not publish a price list. Hotel ads are sold at auction and you pay per click, either a fixed bid or a percentage of the nightly price including taxes and fees. What a booking costs depends on how many clicks turn into bookings, so track your cost per booking, not your cost per click.

Can a small hotel run Google Hotel Ads?

Yes. Google says hotels connected through a partner should ask that connectivity partner to get started, and hotels connected directly can set up campaigns in Google Ads themselves. The partner can be your booking engine, channel manager or property management system. Start with a small budget and check your cost per booking after a few weeks.

Does Google still offer commission bidding for hotel ads?

Google's help pages say its commission-based bid strategies for hotel ads are being sunset. The bid strategies it lists for hotel ads are Manual CPC, CPC%, Enhanced CPC and Target ROAS, which all charge per click. Check Google Ads Help for the current list before you set up a campaign.

What is the difference between free booking links and Hotel Ads?

Free booking links cost nothing per click, and Google says bids have no impact on their ranking. Hotel Ads are paid per click and let you bid for a more visible position. Both need your rates sent to Google through a connectivity partner, so a hotel can start with free links and add paid ads later.

Do I need Hotel Center for Performance Max for travel goals?

No. Google's developer guide says that, unlike Hotel Ads, you do not need a Hotel Center account to use Performance Max for travel goals. Its ads can serve across Google channels such as Search, Display, Video and Discover, and it sets bids automatically.
