Where Should a Small Hotel Spend Its First Ad Budget?

Short answer

Start with what costs nothing per click: free booking links on Google and email to past guests. Then put your first paid budget into one channel, usually Google Hotel Ads or Google Search, and judge it by cost per booking. Add Facebook and Instagram ads only once you can see which ad brought each booking.

A first ad budget is small, so where it goes matters more than how big it is. This guide gives an order to follow and a way to judge each step. Platform rules come from Google's and Meta's own help pages, read on October 13, 2026. The money examples are illustrative.

What order should a small hotel spend in?

  1. Free booking links on Google. They cost nothing per click, and Google says bids have no impact on their ranking (Google's free booking links page). See Google's free booking links.
  2. Your Google Business Profile. It is free and shows your hotel on Search and Maps. See Google Business Profile for hotels.
  3. Email to past guests. Your list already knows you. See email to past guests.
  4. One paid channel. Google Hotel Ads if your rates already reach Google (see Google Hotel Ads for small hotels), or Google Search ads (see Google Ads for hotels).
  5. Facebook and Instagram ads, once you can see which ad brought each booking (see Facebook and Instagram ads for hotels).

Why this order? The free steps show whether guests choose you at your own price. The paid steps then add reach, and you add one at a time, so you can tell which one worked.

How much should a first budget be?

Enough to reach a clear answer, not a fixed number. Each platform has its own rules:

  • Google Ads. Your campaign can spend up to twice your daily budget on a given day, and no more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month (Google Ads Help). So a $10 daily budget can cost up to $304 in a month.
  • Meta. It requires a minimum budget and says the minimum depends on your business vertical, bid strategy, optimization and other factors. An ad set leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit (Meta's guidance on minimum budgets, Meta's help page on the learning phase). A very small budget may never reach 50 results, so changes will keep resetting it.

How do you know a channel is worth keeping?

Compare cost per booking with what a booking site costs you. Take an illustrative 3-night stay worth $660 before taxes. A booking site at 25% costs $165. A channel that spends $1,500 and brings 14 bookings costs about $107 each, 16% of the stay. That channel beats the booking site. One that brings 6 bookings costs $250 each and does not.

SpendBookingsCost per bookingShare of a $660 stay
$1,50014$10716%
$1,50010$15023%
$1,5006$25038%

Illustrative. Before taxes, ad spend only. Your numbers will differ.

None of this works without tracking, because you cannot compare what you cannot see. Set it up first; see tracking which ad brought a booking. Wait a few weeks before judging a channel. Then move budget from the weakest channel to the best one. To see what a booking that comes to your own website is worth, try our savings calculator.

What mistakes waste a first budget?

  • Starting on four channels at once. You cannot tell which one worked.
  • Judging by clicks. Look at bookings.
  • Changing campaigns every few days. On Meta, a significant edit restarts the learning phase.
  • Skipping the free steps. Paying for clicks while your own price is missing on Google is a leak.
  • Forgetting your own name. See OTAs bidding on your hotel's name for when booking sites advertise on it.

First ad budget: quick answers

Is $10 a day enough for Google Ads?

It can be enough to test, but it is small. Google says a campaign can spend up to twice its daily budget on a given day and no more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month, so $10 a day costs up to $304 a month. Judge it by bookings, not clicks, and give it a few weeks.

Which ads work best for a small hotel?

There is no single best channel, so start with what costs nothing per click, free booking links on Google and email to past guests. Then add one paid channel, usually Google Hotel Ads or Google Search ads, and judge it by cost per booking before adding Facebook and Instagram ads.

How long before hotel ads show results?

Judge a channel after a few weeks, not days. Meta says an ad set usually leaves its learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, and each significant edit restarts it. Link every booking to its ad from day one, so the numbers are ready.

How much should a hotel spend on its first ads?

There is no set amount. Spend enough to get a clear answer: on Google a daily budget with a monthly maximum of 30.4 times that, on Meta above its minimum budget. Compare cost per booking with what a booking site's commission costs you on the same stay.
